Terms of Service
Last updated: 21 April 2026
What you're agreeing to
- • You're 18 or older, and you'll verify that with a live selfie before you can use Ether.
- • You'll be yourself — no fake profiles, no impersonation, no catfishing.
- • You won't upload anything illegal, harmful, or sexual involving anyone under 18. We scan every upload and we will ban and report anyone who tries.
- • You'll treat the people you meet here with basic respect. Harassment, hate, and threats get you banned.
- • We can remove content and terminate accounts that break these rules, and we log our decisions so they can be reviewed.
The full legal version is below. For a plain-English explanation of how we keep Ether safe, see our Trust & Safety page.
1. About these Terms
These Terms of Service ("Terms") form a legally binding agreement between you and ARJL LTD, a private limited company registered in England and Wales (company number 17117173) ("Ether", "we", "our", "us"). The Terms govern your access to and use of the Ether mobile application and related services (the "Service"). Our registered office is held on the public record at Companies House; contact us by email first if you need to serve legal correspondence by post and we will provide the current address for service.
By creating an account or using the Service you confirm that you accept these Terms and agree to comply with them. If you do not accept the Terms, you must not use the Service.
2. Eligibility and age verification
You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service. Before you are permitted to use the Service, you will be required to complete an automated age verification check in which you submit a short self-portrait photo (a "selfie"). The photo is processed transiently by Amazon Rekognition to estimate your age range; we do not store the photo itself, only the estimated age range and result. If the lower bound of the estimated age range is below 18 your account will not be activated.
If you believe an age verification decision is incorrect, you may contact us at contact@ether.dating to request a manual review.
By creating an account you represent and warrant that you are at least 18, that the information you provide (including your date of birth) is truthful, and that you have the legal capacity to enter into these Terms.
3. Your account
You agree to:
- Provide accurate, current, and complete information during registration
- Keep your login credentials secure and confidential
- Notify us immediately of any unauthorised use of your account
- Accept responsibility for all activity that occurs under your account
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that contain false or misleading information, or where we reasonably believe the account is being misused.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- Harass, bully, intimidate, stalk, or threaten any other user
- Post content that is defamatory, obscene, hateful, discriminatory, or otherwise unlawful
- Upload sexually explicit material, nudity, or any content depicting minors
- Impersonate any person or entity or misrepresent your identity
- Solicit money, goods, services, or personal information from other users
- Promote or engage in fraud, romance scams, or any illegal activity
- Use the Service for commercial or promotional purposes without our written consent
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to the Service, other users' accounts, or our systems
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service, including by using bots, scrapers, or automated tools
- Upload any content you do not have the legal right to share
We may remove any content that breaches these Terms, and we may warn, suspend, or permanently ban any account that violates them. In serious cases (including but not limited to child safeguarding matters) we may report the conduct to law enforcement and retain evidence for that purpose.
5. Your content
You retain ownership of the content you upload to the Service, including your video introductions, photos, and messages ("User Content"). By uploading User Content, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, use, reproduce, display, and distribute your User Content solely for the purpose of operating and providing the Service.
You are solely responsible for your User Content and represent that you have all necessary rights to upload it. We do not endorse any User Content and are not responsible for content posted by users. We may remove any User Content at any time if we believe it breaches these Terms or is otherwise unlawful.
6. Video introductions
Ether is built around video introductions. By recording and uploading a video introduction you acknowledge that it will be visible to other users of the Service. You agree that your video introduction will accurately represent you and will not contain misleading, offensive, or inappropriate content.
Video introductions are automatically scanned for prohibited content before publication. We sample four evenly-spaced frames from every video and run each through Amazon Rekognition Content Moderation; any frame containing suspected child sexual abuse material, nudity, or violence will block the upload. See our Privacy Policy for details.
7. In-app purchases and payments
The Service offers in-app purchases (for example, unlocking a conversation with a match). All in-app purchases are processed through Apple, Inc. via the Apple App Store and are subject to Apple's terms and conditions in addition to these Terms.
Immediate supply and consumer cancellation rights. Digital content purchased through the Service is normally made available to you immediately upon purchase. Under regulation 37 of the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, by completing a purchase you expressly request immediate performance and acknowledge that you will lose the 14-day statutory right to cancel distance sales of digital content once the content has begun to be supplied. Your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (for example, where the content is not of satisfactory quality or not as described) are not affected.
Refunds. Refund requests for in-app purchases are handled by Apple in accordance with their policies. We do not control whether Apple grants a refund, but we will do what we can to assist if you contact us at contact@ether.dating.
8. Safety, moderation and reporting
Your safety is important to us. If you encounter any user who violates these Terms, makes you feel unsafe, or posts content that concerns you, please report them immediately using the in-app reporting feature or by contacting us at contact@ether.dating.
We investigate all reports and take appropriate action, which may include warning, suspending, or permanently banning the reported user. For serious incidents involving illegal content (including suspected child sexual abuse material) the Service automatically submits a report to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline (which routes UK-flagged reports to NCA / IWF), and our designated safety officer files an independent report with the National Crime Agency Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (NCA CEOP) within a 24-hour service-level commitment, in accordance with the Online Safety Act 2023 and applicable international cooperation frameworks.
We operate under the UK Online Safety Act 2023 and aim to prevent the Service from being used for illegal purposes. We maintain published content and acceptable-use policies, operate automated and human moderation, and take enforcement action against breaches.
9. Intellectual property
The Service and its original content (excluding User Content), features, and functionality are owned by ARJL LTD and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify, distribute, or create derivative works based on the Service without our express written permission.
10. Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. Except as required by law, we make no warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, nor do we warrant the accuracy or completeness of any information provided by other users.
Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes statutory rights you may have as a consumer under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or other applicable UK law.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, ARJL LTD shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with your use of the Service. Our total liability to you for any claim arising from or related to the Service (whether in contract, tort or otherwise) shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or (b) £100.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for: death or personal injury caused by our negligence; fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; any other liability which cannot be excluded or limited by English law.
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless ARJL LTD and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of your use of the Service, your User Content, or your breach of these Terms.
13. Termination and account deletion
We may terminate or suspend your account at any time if we reasonably believe you have breached these Terms, engaged in fraudulent or unlawful conduct, or posed a risk to other users. Where practical, we will notify you.
You may delete your account at any time through Settings → Account → Delete Account in the app. After a 7-day grace period (during which you may cancel deletion by signing back in), your personal data will be permanently removed in accordance with our Privacy Policy. Certain information we are legally required to retain (for example, transaction records, age verification evidence, and safety incident logs) will be kept for the periods set out in the Privacy Policy.
14. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms and any dispute or claim (including non-contractual disputes or claims) arising out of or in connection with them shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Each party irrevocably agrees that the courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction to settle any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with these Terms. If you are a consumer residing in the UK, nothing in this clause affects your right to bring proceedings in your local courts.
15. Changes to these Terms
We may revise these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated version within the app and on our website and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not accept the revised Terms, you should stop using the Service and may delete your account.
